Can Lifestyle Changes Help Alzheimer’s Patients?

The Mayo Clinic, at its online website, reports that the jury is still out on whether healthy lifestyle choices can “prevent or reverse cognitive decline.” That said, they nonetheless add, “there’s no harm in including these strategies in your general wellness plan.” Specific strategies they recommend are summarized as follows:
Regular exercise – May lift mood.
A diet low in fat and rich in fruits and vegetables – May protect cognitive health.
Omega-3 fatty acids – Eating fish may be the way to go.
Social engagement and intellectual stimulation – May help preserve mental function.

As you can see, the operative word is “may.”

A Cure for Alzheimer’s?

NIH Senior Health honestly admits that “there is no known cure for Alzheimer’s disease, but there are treatments that can prevent some symptoms from getting worse for a limited time.” Clearly, the key at this point is research – and the hope is that in the future medical experts can delay the onset, slow the progress, or – best case scenario – prevent Alzheimer’s and dementia entirely. Research, as we are all aware, requires funds, whether from the Government, private organizations (think Alzheimer’s Association), or generous individual donors. Nationally – and globally – dementia is a grave concern for everyone whose life is currently, or could become, affected by the disease. Thus, research is something we should all support.
